Iran's President Brother Detained on Financial Crimes Charges

President Hassan Rouhani's younger brother has been detained on charges of financial crimes. This was learnt by the judiciary yesterday.

Hossein Fereydoun, one of the key players on Iran's nuclear power negotiations with the West, is accused of receiving zero-interest loans, influencing the appointment of a bank director, and several other alleged crimes.

We recalled that a few months months ago, Rouhani had to dismiss this bank director on the grounds of taking an enormous salary. Meanwhile as tension mounts, conservatives have demanded Fereydoun be put on trial as soon as possible.

Fereydoun's detention on Sunday comes a year after the head of the General Inspection Organisation, Naser Seraj, accused him of certain financial crimes.

"Multiple investigations have been conducted regarding this person, also other people have been investigated, some of whom are in jail," deputy judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie said in a live press conference.

"Yesterday, bail was issued for him but because he failed to secure it he was referred to prison," Ejeie said, adding that he would be released if he secures bail, pending trial.

Reports obtained by E-Conner affirms that Fereydoun has acted as a very vital advisor and "gatekeeper" to the reformist Iranian leader re-elected in May, 2017.
